21. Conditions of Performance
- Each prop, or each separate section of a prop designed to be dismantled, must be capable of passing safely through a clear opening 80 cm wide × 200 cm high. The prop or section may be orientated as necessary, provided it can be moved safely.
- When fully assembled on stage, no prop may exceed 250 cm in height, width or depth. This limit applies to the complete assembled structure, including its base and any projections.
- No individual prop, or separately handled section of a dismantlable prop, may weigh more than 25 kg. A prop transported or handled as one unit must comply with this limit as a complete unit.
- Schools must declare the total assembled weight and the weight of each separately handled section when submitting scenic props for approval.
- The weight limit does not mean that a prop is suitable for any particular person to lift or carry. All props must be safely manageable by the permitted handlers, taking account of their age and capability and the prop’s size, shape and weight.
- Props may be handled and moved with appropriate adult or teacher assistance, subject to the competition’s rules on backstage access and assistance.
- Props must be constructed from lightweight materials wherever reasonably possible without compromising strength, stability or safety. Props supporting performers must be designed and constructed to withstand their intended use.
- Wheeled props must have lockable, non-marking castors and must be secured against unintended movement when stationary.
- No exposed metal feet, sharp edges or other surfaces likely to damage the stage floor may be in contact with it. All contact points must have suitable protective coverings.
- All props must be safely transported, assembled, positioned and removed within the permitted times.
- Schools must declare their combined prop storage requirements in advance. Props must fit within the storage space allocated by DWC and must not obstruct access routes or emergency exits. Schools must comply with the designated delivery and collection times.
- Scenic props must be submitted for approval in advance in accordance with DWC’s published submission requirements.
- DWC reserves the right to inspect and refuse any prop considered unsafe or unsuitable for the venue, including where access, handling, stage protection or storage requirements cannot be met.

- There must be no pre-recorded tapping sounds on any music used in the competition. All dancing must be performed live. If a track has tapping embedded in the music already, such as in "Anything Goes" from the musical Anything Goes, then this should be deemed unusable unless the tapping sounds can be removed completely.
- Should a school enter a dance that does not comply with this rule, 5 points will be deducted.

The approved solo ballet repertoire list for 2027 is provided in Appendix 1 at the end of this document.
Definition
For the 2027 Qualifiers, dancers may perform a variation that is not included on the approved Classical Ballet Repertoire List. However, dancers who qualify for the 2027 Finals must prepare and perform a variation from the approved Classical Ballet Repertoire List.
- Repertoire choreography should be suitable for the dancer’s technical and artistic level and performed without significant changes to the original choreography.
Notes
- It is strictly prohibited to use any kind of protected original choreography, unless DWC receives written permission from the designated organisation. This includes all choreographies that require formal permission to be danced in a competition environment.
- If protected choreography is presented at the Finals, it will receive an automatic score of 70 unless permission has been provided in advance. For example: Etudes (H. Lander) Ballerina’s Variation, all choreographies by Sir Frederick Ashton, all choreographies by Pierre Lacotte, and all choreographies by George Balanchine.
- Please note that some repertoire remains protected by copyright, as choreography is generally protected for 70 years after the choreographer’s death. It is the responsibility of the teacher/dancer to research the specific repertoire being performed, identify the choreographer, and establish whether the choreography is still protected by copyright.
- Costumes must contribute to the character and the style of the dance and be age appropriate.
- Children’s Ballet Repertoire (ages 10–11): Teachers are strongly advised to choose age-appropriate variations, and may make minor adaptations or simplifications to the variations where necessary to suit the dancer’s technical level. For all other age categories, teachers are expected to respect the original repertoire choreography.

Recognised classical ballet repertoire is not permitted in this category.
- Ballet must remain the foundation of the choreography and movement vocabulary. This category allows original choreography in a range of ballet styles, including classical, neo-classical and modern ballet.
- For solos only: classical music may be used for original choreography. However, dancers and teachers are advised to avoid music strongly associated with a recognised classical ballet solo or variation.
- The use of parallel leg positions is permitted as an extension to the five established positions of classical ballet, provided that the overall movement vocabulary remains clearly rooted in ballet technique.
Notes
- Floor work should be minimal and always in keeping with ballet aesthetics.
- Character dance excerpts from classical ballets, such as the Spanish Dance and Czardas from Swan Lake and the Russian Dance from The Nutcracker, should be entered in Ballet Any Style and not in the National/Folklore category.

- It draws on influences including Street, Jazz and other dance forms, shaped into a polished choreographic performance.
